Vampires and turkey

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Sara bought a bunch (like, twenty) of Halloween custumes on clearance. Figure about a buck-a-pop. Ford has been having a lot of fun. Yay for creative play! Take that videogames culture!

Also included: food photos and Ford with a turkey leg (that he couldn’t lift.)

Grub!

Soccer!

Lego magnetSo it’s Sunday morning. I’m on the potty (and yes, we all call it a potty,) when Ford comes bashing into the bathroom with a lego car. It’s got an armature attached to one side and has a cylindrical magnet encased in plastic (with one exposed face) clicked onto the end. He says to me:

“Look at this cool magnet piece I found in your lego box Dad.”

“That’s awesome.” I say. “What are you going to use it for?”

“I’m not sure. But it’s a north pole magnet.”

I blink a couple times and respond. “What do you mean?”

He looks at me with his bright eyes and pokes the exposed ceramic portion of the magnet.

“This is the north pole of the magnet. I know this.” (Serious gaze and nod.)

“How did you determine that?”

“Because when I try to touch it with the north pole of my other magnet it pushes back, but the south pole sticks to it” he explains like a patient, 3 foot tall teacher.

“Oh really?”

“Yeah. With magnets south only sticks to north and north only sticks to south.”

I blink some more. “So that’s a north pole magnet there.” (On the exposed face.)

“Yup.”

And Ford goes back down the hall to play (leaving the bathroom door open of course.)

Deductive reasoning at age six!

May and most of June

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Things in the Stark Household have been fairly normal with numerous outings and fun times had by all. Let’s hit some of the high points and a couple lows:

  • Museum of Science is one of Ford’s favorite places and we had a blast there.
  • I saw Iron Man three times and The Incredible Hulk Twice. Ford is enjoying his Iron Man action figures, and so am I! Marvel seems to have figured out how to get it right (finally.)
  • Life at The MathWorks is great! We had a great 1.5 day contest/event/love-in where everyone had a day to pick some “annoying itch” at work and spend the day fixing it (or coming up with a plan to fix it.) It was great fun! People were hacking away on code, but also process changes, new ideas for organization, communication…it was fantastic.
  • Ford has enjoyed his his first season in T-Ball. (Photo’s in the gallery.)
  • I’ve started playing in Role Playing group every two weeks. (Yeah, geek. I know.) It’s been so long since I did anything like that I’d forgotten how much fun it can be with a good group. Stress the part about GOOD group. If the chemistry isn’t there, it sucks. Our group has potential, so I’m sticking with it to see where it goes. I *am* having a good time. (Thanks Jeb!) We’ve played two systems so far (both new to me.) Serenity (A space opera/western setting based on the cancelled (*sob*) show FireFly and TORG which I enjoyed, but obviously we only scratched it’s surface.
  • Mallen has me hooked on Shadowrun…bought the rulebook and am now researching my future character. (Again, (*points to self*) Geek.)
  • I have NOT worked on any music in the last 6 weeks, but am getting an additional sound library for my birthday (thanks honey) which will probably drive some output for July.
  • Ford is alleric to penecillin. We know this now because he just about died last week. All is well now, but phew…scary stuff.

Hmmm. That’s all for now. See you in a couple weeks!
